David O'Keefe

From a football perspective, David began coaching in 1990 when he was asked to look after an U14 team at Normanhurst Eagles Football Club (his nephew's team) and instantly fell in love with educating & inspiring kids how to play football with a focus on participation and enjoyment.

25 years later he is still involved with the same club where he is now a life member. He’s also held the role of junior development officer from 1991 – 2000 where he “coached the coaches”, ran skills development clinics for junior boys and girls and annual gala days for the club. After working alongside former Socceroo captain Paul Wade for five seasons, more recently he has been coaching the clubs premier league squad, as well as being the clubs ‘director of coaching’ which oversees the development of the clubs mini and junior players.

He began his representative coaching career as an assistant coach for the U14 Gladesville-Hornsby youth league team in 1997. In his 3rd year at Gladesville-Hornsby (1999) he coached the U13 youth league team, then in the following year (2000) the club became Northern Spirit Football Club and he then took over the reins of the mighty U11 cadet league team and went on to coach that team for three successive years (including winning the U12 minor premiership).

In 2003/2004 he worked alongside former assistant National Coach Raul Blanco at Parramatta Eagles Soccer Academy helping to develop their scholarship players ranging from the ages of U12 - U18 and in 2005 he coached their U15 youth league team (grand finalists).  Since 2002, David has been fortunate enough to travel overseas (Europe and Japan) on several occasions as part of his self-funded coach education journey visiting such clubs as Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Charlton, Crewe, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, West Ham, Wolves, QPR, Cardiff, Swansea, Southampton, Reading, Juventus, PSV, Feyenoord, Excelsior, Ajax, Basel, Hamburg and more recently Yokohama Marrinos in Japan.

During this time David has been able to update and develop his coaching skills, techniques and methods whilst at the same time developing strong relationships with many of the academy coaches and scouts at several of the above mentioned clubs.  He’s also had the pleasure to meet and observe sessions with some internationally recognised coaches such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez, Claudio Ranieri, Alan Curbishley, Dario Gradi, Marc Overmars, Thorsten Fink and more recently Brendan Rodgers from Liverpool Football Club.

Having plenty of experience coaching boys & men over a 24 year period, David was offered and accepted a coaching role at Barker College in 2009 with the key responsibility to coach the Girls 1sts team but to also develop and grow the profile of girl’s football at the College. In the past 7 years the program has grown from 1 team to 5 teams and the 1sts have been undefeated premiers and champions for six successive seasons which is a positive reflection on the culture that he has developed at the school.

David loves nothing more than seeing young players he’s coached and mentored go on to bigger and better things on/off the field and therefore gets great satisfaction in maintaining close relationships with those players well beyond his direct involvement with them as their coach.
